mini dv dcr 16e and windows xp

ok i got myself a toshiba equium laptop with windows xp service pack 3. only so i can get my sony mini dv dcr 16e to work on it, i gave up on windows 10 on tower pc, spent loads of cash buying firewire card and cables and still could not do it, so last time i used my camera was when i had windows xp and pixela on it, worked a treat, now i have this laptop what is the best way of doing this, i know pixela is no longer here (or if someone knows where i can get it) i want to get my videos off the mini tapes and saved to laptop, there is a legazy driver installed and there is a firewire 400 4 pin card on it as well. any help would be very appreciated.
