the earphones settings are turned on (as if I had earphones on) but there are no earphones on the earphone jack. i cannot listen to anything

check if there's anything inside the 3.5mm port, also, restart the phone and report back.

Hi @TwinTing31 and welcome to the support forum!

In addition to what @uliwooly mentioned, reboot your phone in safe mode and try to start for example a youtube video to see if the same behaviour occur there.

If none of the troubleshooting methods manage to get it sorted and the behaviour persists in safe mode, I suggest that you try to repair the software on the phone using Xperia Companion and a computer. Do note though that this will erase all user data from the phone, so it is advised to do a backup before the repair to avoid data loss.
